Choi Seung hyun (Korean: 최승현, Hanja: 崔勝鉉), better known by his stage name T.O.P, is a rapper and actor from South Korea. Best known for being a member of Korean boy band Big Bang, he has also been in dramas such as I Am Sam. He stars in the upcoming spy thriller IRIS, to be released in late 2009.
T.O.P was inspired after listening to rapper, Notorious B.I.G. in the 4th or 5th grade in elementary school. He was moved and it was then that he wanted to get into music.
Choi Seung Hyun was a well known underground rapper prior to his involvement in Big Bang. He initially used the name ‘Tempo’ when he started rapping in middle school. At first, he performed in gigs located in a club in Gangnam in 2003-2005 and other underground clubs. He never signed a label or released an album. However, one of his songs, “Buckwild”, was storming the internet in mp3 format. Later, the name T.O.P was given to him to use by Se7en, another Korean singer.
He won KBS Radio’s “Rap Battle” in 2003.
